We have checked the size of Second Life groups (counted the number of members) for more
than 100,000 groups. Some are quite large. There are even a few groups that have more
than 10,000 members. But most groups (65%) do not have more than 20 members.
There are some issues
with large groups, so it's strange that residents are not removing
themselves from those groups and that they still exist.
Effective groups should not be larger than
150,
and the optimal group size is around
45-50.
This number is based on some research done by
Robin Dunbar which might
also be applicable to virtual worlds.
